The 2.7L was a very advanced engine for Chrysler. Some sludge issues may have been from the internal water pump beginning to leak. If the water pump let loose, it would dump coolant into the crankcase and jump the chain, possibly crashing valves.
The later ones were much improved and I would not hesitate to own one.




You didn't mention the year or model of your 3.3L. A used one may have the same brittle plastic handle that broke on your old stick. New ones are inexpensive enough. An example:
